It is somewhat comical to hear Legislators trying to refine a half measure smoking ban that will not offend anyone buy spice online. Louisiana state law already bans smoking in public buildings, schools, and other sites. Now a bill to ban smoking in bars and casino’s is looking for approval. A House committee rejected a similar bill last year even after trimming it down. The Casino Association of Louisiana state that there would be a 15% loss in business. This is based on juridictions that have enacted such bans. The Casino Association says that would trigger a loss of 3300 plus jobs, including almost 1600 casino jobs. The state itself would lose somewhere around 79 million in tax revenue, because casino gamblers would simply gamble somewhere else.
Now at this point we should be a little relieved. The reason for this relief is that we know some Legislators aren’t concerned with tax revenue or jobs. This was stated by a Legislator when informed that the Herbal incense Industry is a 128 million industry. At that point it was stated that “it didn’t matter how much money was involved, we need to ban it.” Sen. Marionneaux said the current Louisiana anti-smoking law has saved about 1,100 lives. His concern is for the safety and health of our citizens. Do any other Legislators have that half concerned with involving citizens. I say half because any talk of limiting smoking is a half measure or less. No offense personally to anyone, however, don’t be so hypocritical as to profess concern for the safety and health of the citizens and refuse to stand up and do what is needed.
We are probably about to ban the Herbal Incense( who needs that tax money) instead of putting an age requirement on it. We are trying to instill a half measure on smoking instead of just adding it to the bill banning the Incense. Then Smoking would be banned. We wouldn’t have to worry about people working in any industry being affected by smoking. How many lives would a total ban on smoking save? Could you even imagine the relief that the Health Care Industry would feel as all smoking related diseases would start to decline?
I would like to ask all concerned Legislators why it is that Alcohol companies are allowed to sell products that get you high. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to look in any newspaper and see a daily list of incidents involving drinking, from suspected 1st offense DWI to wrecks and suicides. All the while knowing that a 21 age requirement isn’t good enough. Maybe the real reason for the Incense ban is more simple than we think. no one is sure if the product will have any negative effects on people. If we could run some test and find a way for these products to BE AS HARMFUL TO US AS ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO, then maybe it could be sold in similar fashion with no regards to people.
SHAME ON ALL HERBAL INCENSE MANUFACTURERS FOR NOT MAKING IT EASY TO DETERMINE THAT HERBAL INCENSE IS AS DANGEROUS OR AT LEAST AS ADDICTIVE AS TOBACCO AND ALCOHOL!!!
